Conflict in Organizations

I. INTRODUCTION

In a rapidly changing world, individuals, groups and organisations cannot avoid change. Change naturally creates conflict, so they also cannot avoid conflict. Most conflict cannot be eliminated, but it can be managed to produce constructive rather than destructive results. Costantino (1996) says that “conflict is like water: too much causes damage to people and property; too little creates a dry, barren landscape devoid of life and colour”. Everyone needs water to survive. Organisations also need an appropriate level of conflict to thrive and grow as well.

Employees and managers are people who have the responsibility to achieve this outcome. To manage conflict in organisations people need to understand the types and the causes of conflict, ways to diagnose the type of conflict and methods to manage conflict. This paper will discuss these issues. The paper is divided into seven parts: introduction, definitions, types of conflict, causes of conflict, ways to diagnose the type of conflict, methods to manage conflict, and the conclusion.
